Valley's housing stock tells the story of its mill-village past. Fairfax, Langdale, River View, and Shawmut each contain the cottages and company-built homes that once housed mill workers, many of them modest single-family frame or brick houses on compact lots. Alongside these historic neighborhoods sit mid-century subdivisions and newer homes built as the city grew after 1980 incorporation. The result is a varied, predominantly single-family market with an unusual depth of older, character-rich housing. Development intensity is moderate, and the city retains the scale of a small Alabama community rather than a large suburb, with some surrounding rural acreage available beyond the older village cores.

Valley is best understood through the four mill villages that formed it. Fairfax, in the south, and Langdale, River View, and Shawmut to the north were separate company towns, each built around its own mill, churches, schools, and worker housing. Their historic cores still read distinctly today, with brick commercial buildings, mill structures, and residential streets laid out around the original plants. The merger of 1980 unified them under a single city government, but the villages' identities endure in neighborhood names and landmarks. Around these cores, later residential development filled in the spaces between the villages, knitting the four communities into one continuous city.

Valley combines a deep industrial heritage with the rhythms of an eastern Alabama small city. Community pride runs through the mill-village history, preserved in historic structures and celebrated by local organizations committed to the city's textile legacy. Everyday life centers on churches, schools, and community recreation, with the Chattahoochee River and West Point Lake providing a natural backdrop. The city's location on Interstate 85 puts Atlanta and Montgomery within easy reach for shopping, airports, and entertainment while keeping day-to-day life local. Valley's blend of historic character, riverside setting, and highway convenience gives it a grounded, family-oriented atmosphere.

Public education in Valley is provided by the Chambers County School District, which operates schools across the Valley and LaFayette areas. The system includes six elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools, and a career technical center for grades eight through twelve. Valley's own schools include Fairfax Elementary, Bob Harding Shawmut Elementary, and Valley High School, among others, reflecting the city's four-village geography. The countywide district gives Valley students access to consolidated secondary campuses and career-technical programs within their home community. Higher education and technical training are available within the region, including nearby community colleges.

Interstate 85 runs through the Valley area, connecting the city to Atlanta, about 75 miles to the northeast, and Montgomery, about 85 miles to the southwest. This corridor gives Valley direct highway access to two major airports — Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International and Montgomery Regional — and to the broader Southeast. U.S. Highways and state routes, including Highway 29, serve the city's local street network, which ties the four former mill villages together. The Chattahoochee River historically carried the region's cotton and finished goods to market, and today West Point Lake and its shoreline remain central to the area's geography, with the river crossing into Georgia immediately east of the city.

West Point Lake, a 35-mile reservoir on the Chattahoochee River with roughly 525 miles of shoreline, is Valley's defining outdoor resource, offering fishing, boating, camping, swimming, and hunting. The city has partnered to develop paddling trails along the river, and a rails-to-trails path and community sports complex with aquatics add close-to-home recreation. Surrounded by forests and rolling fields, the lake and riverfront draw anglers and boaters from across the region. The Chattahoochee's dams and backwaters also support wildlife viewing and quiet coves. Recreation in Valley is therefore closely tied to water, reflecting the river that shaped the city's industry and geography.
